Thus there was none in the court of Raja Parikshit who could understand the principle of correctly calculating the ages of the several yugas. Thus the mistake continued till recent times. It was at time that they made the first error in the Hindu almanac which was this: In BCE when the old Dvapara Yuga was supposed to have ended, the court of Raja Parikshit out of confusion started the Kali yuga with the beginning year as year. That meant that they dragged the Dvapara yuga also into the Kali Yuga.
As a result, at CE when the old Kali Yuga was supposed to have ended, they found the Kali Yuga already about old. At that time the wise Hindu scholars started to enquire again, and discovered correctly that the Kali Yuga was supposed to be only years old.
However, in an attempt to fix the almanac, they thought wrongly that the each 'year' in the Kali Yuga was to be a daivya year of 'earth year' long. And that was how the error crept into the almanac and which was continued till today. Four thousand of years, they say, is the Satya Yuga or the Golden Age of the world.
Its morning twilight has just as many hundreds, and its period of evening dusk is of the same length i. In the other three ages, with their ages, with their morning and evening twilights, the thousands and hundreds decrease by one i. That fourfold cycle comprising 12, years is called an Age of the Gods. The sum of a thousand divine ages constitutes one day of Brahma; and of the same length is its night.
The Sun with its planets and their moons, takes some star as its dual and revolves round it about years of our earth — a celestial phenomenon which causes the backward movement of the equinoctial points around the zodiac. In one revolution, the Sun completes finishes one Electric Circuit consisting of one Descending and one years in an Ascending arc of Electric Couple Daivya yuga.. Each Daivya yuga of 12, years are divided into four yugas: Kali, Dvapara, Tetra and Satya each of , , and years respectively.
The Sun also has another motion by which it revolves round a Grand Center, called Vishnunabhi, which is the seat of the creative power, Brahma, the universal magnetism. From 11, BCE, when Autumnal Equinox was on the first point of Aries, the Sun began to move away from the point of its orbit nearest to the Grand Center towards the point furthest from it, and accordingly the intellectual power of man began to diminish.
During the first years the Sun took to pass through one of the Satya Couples part of the orbit. During the next years the Sun took to pass through the descending Treta yuga.
The years next following the Sun passed through the descending Dvapara yuga. In more years the Sun passed through the descending Kali yuga and completes the daivya yuga.
It has reached the point in its orbit which is farthest from the Grand Center when the Autumnal Equinox was on the first point of Libra. The intellectual power of man was so much diminished that it could no longer comprehend anything beyond the gross material of creation. The period around CE was thus the darkest part of Kali yuga. Historical facts such as the fall of the Roman empire, the fall of the Gupta empire etc show this. The Sun then starts to move on the ascending phase of the daivya yuga of years.
The correct positions of the yugas is shown in the diagram. Please note that at present we are in the th year of the Dvapara yuga. It is interesting to note that, like the Indians, some other ancient cultures also believed in a celestial cycle of time, producing alternating Dark and Golden Ages.
These four yugas taken together come to a total of 12, years. The story of Mahabharat needs to be seen in a certain context. Three to four months after the war, the Kali Yuga began. If you subtract , which is the cumulative number of years of the two Kali Yugas that are at the bottom of the ellipse which describes the axial precession, you arrive at years. That means we have already completed years of Dwapara Yuga, and since its total duration is years, we still have 70 years until its completion.
In the year , we will complete Dwapara Yuga and move on to Treta Yuga. The world will go through another upheaval, not necessarily in terms of war but probably in terms of population explosion and natural calamities, before moving on to this new era of wellbeing and upward movement of human consciousness.
The human mind will be at its highest capability. Or in other words, we will have sensible people. All it takes to live well on this planet is a bunch of sensible people. In Satya Yuga, human ability to communicate will be at its best because the ether will be very close. Right now, the etheric sphere of the planet is raised to a certain point.
There was a time when it was much higher — now it has come a little closer. When the ether is very close and I want to convey something to you, I do not have to say it. Even when my eyes are closed, you will know what I want to say. When the ether rises a little bit but is still at a certain distance, if I close my eyes, you will not know, but if I open my eyes and look at you, you will know what I want to convey. If the ether rises some more, you can know by breath.
If you go into the forest, you will see, because your vision is blocked to some extent, after some time, the most significant way of knowing things is by smell. Most animals that live there know things only by smell.
Because of such concentrated life energy, the ether is high. Because the ether is high, they do not have to see. If you talk, they will get confused. When the ether is very low, you have to talk all the time — otherwise, people will not get it. Even if you talk, they will not get it. You have to knock and talk continuously to make them get it. The etheric content in the atmosphere determines how sensitive you are in terms of your ability to communicate.
At the same time, no matter which time, which yuga, which planetary position we are in right now, still, individual human beings can rise above all this. Still, individual human beings can live in a golden time within themselves.
Even in the worst of times, the possibility to be well above it is always there for an individual human being. There are many things one can do to enhance the ether or create etheric content. This is why Krishna said, in Kali Yuga, which is down there, far away from the Super Sun, the ether will be so low that there is no point in trying to teach them yoga, meditation , mantras , or yantras — they will not get it.
Just teach them devotion. If they are devout, they will generate their own ether. And because of this etheric content in the atmosphere, they will perceive. Devotion is not for the dumb — but even if you are the dumbest, you can still get it. Thousands of years ago, they said that as the solar system moves closer to the Super Sun, human intelligence will blossom.
As the solar system moves closer, the realization that the whole body and the whole universe are electric structures will come naturally. Right now, we are moving towards Treta Yuga, which is the second best time that can happen in a cycle of yugas.
Krishna also said that after over years, there will come a many thousand year period of time that will be fabulous. We will not make it there, but we can set the foundations for it and have the joy of creating an atmosphere for a stretch of thousands of years of golden time upon the planet.
This is not all predictions and conjecture — this is based on a deep-rooted understanding about what happens with the human mind in relation to the planet on which we live. We do not only live on this planet — we are the planet. If you do not understand this today, you will understand this when you are buried.
The planet understands that you are a part of it — only you think something else of yourself. The story begins because you have false ideas about yourself. Mahabharat represents the grand misconception of human beings about life; their sufferings, their rises and falls. It goes on and on, simply because human beings are struggling to come in tune with life.
Whatever someone who is in tune with it tries to say, everyone else will misunderstand. Light cannot be put in words, but if you open your eyes, you can see the light. Similarly, if this life that you are opens up, it can feel life, it can become life.
Life cannot be told. Telling is only to inspire, to de-mesmerize you from your own self-mesmerism. Every human being has hypnotized himself or herself into their own limitations and they believe this is it. If you undo that hypnotism, they will feel fearful because existence is limitless. Therefore, if they are spinning one way, you have to spin them the opposite way for some time for them to feel they are going somewhere. The whole Mahabharat is just this effort. No matter what they are doing, everyone thinks they are doing it for the good.
But everyone is neither good nor bad , neither right nor wrong — the story just goes on. The story is not about a particular person — Mahabharat comes under the classification of Itihasa.
In India, there are three categories of great texts: Itihasa, Purana , Veda. Vedas are full of abstract ideas, scientific theories, and explanations for celestial happenings. Puranas are stories of beings who are not human. Itihasa is the story of the human being, not in terms of history, though there is a historic element to it. The facts are rooted in history, but this is the story of every human being — it is about the meaning of your life. Only if it is your story , it can be a process of growth for you.
Sadhguru says that don't believe until you know it. The movement of the equinox is the perfect definition for the kaal chakra but how does the level of consciousness vary in it all. Thank you. That's a very good point. It seems that no matter how far you go with dividing by 2, the sum is always 9. But now there's a comment below with number — it seems to work by the same principle. And now I discovered that any number of which the sum of it's digits is equal to 9, regardless of the number — you try any: , 54, , , etc if you continously divide it by 2, the sum of its digits is always 9. But I think this must be well known in mathematics as a certain rule, I don't know if it has a name but I think I've seen it before somewhere — not in school though.
It sheds much light on your particular question and about the whole fascinating topic of the Yugas. However, Paramhansa Yogananda explained that the meditation techniques of Kriya Yoga are extremely suitable for this present age of Dwapara Yuga and are powerful in their ability to lead us to liberation and freedom in God, as quickly as possible.

Your Spiritual Questions Answered. Seventy-one divine years [of the gods] comprise a manvantara. An age of Indra is equivalent to one manvantara. Thus, after the existence of twenty-eight Indras, there is one day and night of Brahma. Thus, after the lapse of one hundred and eight years, the life of Brahma comes to an end.
The same time frame is calculated with a different description in the Kalki Purana The duration of Satya-yuga is four thousand celestial years, Treta-yuga is three thousand celestial years, Dvapara-yuga is two thousand celestial years, and Kali-yuga is one thousand celestial years. The transitional periods of the four yugas are four hundred, three hundred, two hundred, and one hundred celestial years respectively. In this way, the total comes to twelve thousand celestial years.
The duration of the reign of each Manu is seventy-one cycles of the four yugas. Fourteen Manus reign during one day of Brahma. To understand this in greater detail and to also show the consistency of these calculations throughout the Vedic literature, we can use the additional example. Here Suta Gosvami explains to the sages during the huge gathering at the forest of Naimisaranya years ago, all of the divisions of time and how the lengths of the yugas are formulated, as related in the Vayu Purana.
Now I shall recount them in detail. Listen and understand them. Calculating everything and mentioning in detail, I shall narrate in full the six aspects of yugas, namely yugabheda difference in yugas , yugadharma the particular characteristics of each yuga , yugasandhi the junction of yugas , yugamsha the parts of yugas , and yugasandhana the joints of the yugas.
The human year can be understood calculated by means of valid working knowledge. Calculating on the basis of that year [in the human time frame], I shall explain the four yugas. The time taken to utter a short syllable is equal to a Nimesha. Nimesha, Kashtha, Kala, and Muhurta are the units of time. Thirty Muhurtas make one full day and night. The sun demarcates the human as well as the divine days and nights.
The day is intended for activity and the night is meant for sleep. A human month constitutes the day and night of the Pitris [the departed ancestors, now included as part of the celestials].
Its division is thus: The dark half is the day for them and the bright half is their night for sleep [as calculated by the waning and waxing of the moon]. On the basis of the human calculation, three hundred and sixty months constitute a year of the Pitris. A hundred human years constitute three years and four months of the Pitris.
A human year in accordance with the human calculation is one day and one night of the Devas [the higher demigods]. This is the conclusion in this scripture. A further classification is that the Uttarayana period northern transit of the sun is the day and the Dakshinayana period southern transit of the sun is the night of the Devas. Thirty of the days and nights of the gods, or thirty human years make one divine month of the gods. One hundred human years make three divine months and three divine days.
Thus is the divine reckoning for divisions of time. Three thousand and thirty years according to human calculation constitute one year of the Seven Sages Saptarishis or the astrological constellation of the Great Bear. Nine thousand and ninety human years make one Kraunchan year. Thirty-six thousand human years should be known as one hundred divine years. Thus is the calculation of the divine unit of time. Persons well versed in calculation say that three hundred and sixty thousand , years reckoned on the basis of human time units constitute a thousand divine years [of the Devas].
It is thus that the sages sang about the divine calculation. They have formulated the reckoning of the yugas and their duration on the basis of this divine calculation. Now with all of this calculating we reach the point where it is used to establish the durations of the four yugas as followed:. The first one is Krita, followed by Treta, Dvapara, and Kali-yuga.
One should reckon these yugas in this order. They say that the Krita-yuga consists of four thousand years. The Sandhya transition period consists of as many hundreds of years divine years. The Sandhyamsha part of the junction with the next yuga is equal to the Sandhya period. In the Sandhyas and Sandhyamshas of the other yugas there is a gradual reduction of a thousand [years of the yuga] and hundred years [in the Sandhya and Sandhyamsha transitions]. The wise say that Dvapara-yuga contains two thousand [celestial] years, and the Sandhya consists of two hundred years and the Sandhyamsha is equal to the Sandhya [two hundred years].
The learned say that Kali-yuga consists of a thousand years, and its Sandhya is of a hundred years and the Sandhyamsha is the same. This period of twelve thousand divine years is known as a Maha-yuga.
