This occured and in the town of Gaeta in Italy and then not long after in multiple different parts of Italy, especially in the central and southern areas.
Now, here is where Raffaele Esposito comes in. Raffaele Esposito was the most well-liked pizza maker in Naples and is credited with being the first person to make this pizza. Since it was so well-liked, he was called to make one of his infamous pizzas for the visit of King Umberto and Queen Margherita of Italy in the year of He prepared three different pizzas, one of which included tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, and basil to look like the red white and green of the Italian flag.
Raffaele Esposito was so delicious that Queen Margherita sent him a letter stating that his pizzas were incredible.
At that time, Esposito was considered the premier pizza-maker in the city of Naples. Esposito and his wife were admitted to the royal kitchens to prepare this dish as he saw fit. Deeming the traditional garlic topping to be unfit for the royal palate, Esposito instead prepared three different pizzas, the last of which used a combination of tomatoes, mozzarella cheese and basil to emulate the red, white, and green of the Italian flag. It is claimed by some sources that this was the first time pizza was made with mozzarella cheese.
