Here are three essential steps:. This first step to ending racism is to recognize its existence. Many people think of racism as always overtly blatant or intentional, but racism comes in many forms.
Things like poll taxes and literacy tests kept people from voting. Those affected by racism are gaslit. Getting rid of laws that negatively and disproportionately affect certain races is a vital part of ending systemic racism.
There are many examples of systemic racism around the world. In the United States, systemic racism is found in healthcare, banking, and education. In South Africa, the apartheid system ensured that the white population stayed on top politically, socially, and economically, while black Africans were the most disenfranchised.

For them the conversation has no utility because its purpose is to rectify the injustices that currently exist. People are afraid of conflict in these kinds of conversations.
Task-based conflict is when people disagree about the best course of action. The second thing is to engage in conversations with curiosity and not with certainty. Why should companies do it? Are we in that moment now and what is the best way to respond to it? So for some, there is going to be backlash. And then there are some people who are apathetic. The third type are people deeply invested in social justice. You should only criticise the comment, not the person.
If you feel the conversation is turning into an argument, stop and take a breath. If you become emotional it will be more difficult for you to respond, so it is best to try and stay calm. Continue the conversation by asking the person an open-ended question, like:. You may be able to use their response to continue the conversation constructively because their answer might reveal that their prejudice is based on an assumption or incorrect fact that you can put right.
